The Emotional Letter Of Jonathan Edwards’ Widow
Jonathan Edwards died in 1758. He is widely considered one of the greatest theologians of all time. He was powerfully used by God during the Great Awakening, and was the president of Princeton.
It has been well said that one of the best answers to the question, “Are you a Christian?” is to reply, “Ask those who know me.” It is easy to fool those around us, but not those in our closest relationships. They are best equipped to answer such a question about our lives.
So what did the widow of this giant of the faith share about her husband? Pay close attention to her words, (especially us husbands today). Here she is writing to her daughter Esther to share of Edward’s passing.
My very dear child,
What shall I say? A holy and good God has covered us with a dark cloud. The Lord has done it. He has made me adore his goodness, that we had him so long. But my God lives; and he has my heart.
O what a legacy my husband, and your father, has left us! We are all given to God; and there I am, and love to be.
Your ever affectionate mother, Sarah Edwards
It is beyond important that our lives match what we say we believe. Our actions can echo for generations. How do you want to be remembered? What do you need to change today? Why wait?
