Aristotle Onassis, the billionaire shipping tycoon who married Jacqueline Kennedy, once shared that if he were down to his last three dollars, he wouldn’t spend it at a soup line.

He explained that if he were down to his last few dollars, he would find the nicest restaurant in town, in the nicest hotel in town, and sit down and have a three dollar cup of coffee.

The reason was that being in that type of environment was the place he knew he needed to be to inspire his mind and his belief that he could accomplish great things. He understood that mindset plays a huge part in any endeavor.

Most people exaggerate their fears and what they imagine to be wrong in the moment. Leadership is the ability to see things as they are but not worse than they are. It is also the ability to see what is possible, even if no one else believes it.

When David faced Goliath, his brothers told him to go home and stop wasting everyone’s time. When he told the king he would fight the giant, the king told him he was too small and too young.

As Mike Murdock shares, “Your mind replays the past; your imagination pre-plays the future. David visualized past triumphs that energized him before he faced Goliath.”

When the king told him he couldn’t win, David replied, “Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them” (1 Samuel 17). It was what David spoke that made all the difference. It always is.

When Moses and the tribes of Israel were exploring Canaan the spies reported, “The people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there…they are stronger than we are…All the people we saw there are of great size… We saw the Nephilim there… We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them” (Numbers 13).

You can imagine the scene as if those describing the enemy were telling a scary story around a campfire at night. You can hear the fear and exaggeration in their statements, “Powerful…very large…stronger…great size…we saw them!”

What was the result? The crowd of thousands of people was stirred by fear, so much so they wanted to kill Moses and Joshua for trying to encourage them that they could successfully enter Canaan.

During the Korean War, Colonel “Chesty” Puller found his regiments surrounded. He was told, “The enemy is to the North, the South, the East and the West.” Colonel Puller replied, “Good, we have them right where we want them!”

The words you proclaim make all the difference in the world. You are never down to your last cup of coffee if you say and believe that it is really the first drink of a better tomorrow.
