Does God See You?

It is estimated that all of the skin, mineral and chemical elements that make up the human body are worth about $4.50. People have always wondered if their life has been worthwhile and were they really valued.

Nancy Pearcey makes the observation that part of the controversy surrounding Darwin’s claims that man had evolved from lower life forms were due in fact to Western culture’s belief that man was created in God’s image.

As she writes, were Darwin to have first offered his theory in China or India it would not have received much if any attention because at the time these cultures already felt that man was simply an animal with no real inherent value.

Shortly before his own death Elvis had written, “I feel so alone sometimes. The night is quiet for me. I’d love to be able to sleep. I’m glad everyone is gone now. I’ll probably not rest. I have no need for all of this. Help me Lord.” Like many, he wrestled deeply with whether or not anyone cared.

When facing their own death terminally ill patients inevitably share the same thing when asked what they would do differently if they could do it all over again.

Repeatedly patients share that they wished they had sought more spiritual health, love, peace of mind, time with loved ones and had lived with purpose. The question we all need to ask is, why wait. Each of these can be ours today if we simply learn to see ourselves from heaven’s perspective.

Recently I was at a seminar when Phyllis Hendry shared about the process of grieving she went through when she lost her husband. After the funeral when her family and friends had all gone home she found herself sitting in the rain at the cemetery.

Through the heartache she looked up and asked, “Do you see me?” As the rain mixed with her tears and fell into the mud she waited in silence.

Suddenly she felt a voice of compassion deep in her heart say, “I knew you before you were born…I created your most innermost being…I gave my life for you.” Then a peace and love and a cleansing washed over her that were hard to put into words.

When we allow ourselves to be immersed in that same love we realize that our value comes from being children of God.

The Psalmist makes an extraordinary statement when he writes, “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalm 103).

So may you rest this day in the promise that God knows your life from beginning to end; that he walks with you moment by moment with an incomprehensible love; that he can be trusted with all of your hopes and dreams; and that yes, he sees you.
